What Am I Supposed to Wear?

Friday, October 30, 2015

Have you ever been faced with a dress code, but had no idea where to start or what the dress code even requires? Here is a list ranging from business casual to white tie. Our hope is to make sure that as a SHE, you are always the best dressed in the room!

Business Casual – this is your typical office wear these days. The difficult part of this one is that it tends to vary office to office. My suggestion is to wear the high end of the spectrum for a few days and observe what everyone else is wearing.  Your typical business casual wear includes khaki pants, slacks, and skirts; blouses, polo shirts, or shirts with collar. A necktie is not necessary in this scenario.  Consider this – if you wouldn’t wear it to church, you shouldn’t wear it to the office!

Business Attire – this is your more formal office wear, like if you have an important meeting. This is also a great go-to for a wedding that hasn’t been specified as a specific dress code.

Men - would wear a suit (jacket and pants). Typically in a dark color, gray, dark blue, brown, or black. It can be with or without a pattern.  He’ll need to wear a long-sleeved button down shirt, dress shoes and a necktie.

Women - would wear something similar. A suit (jacket and matching skirt or slacks), plus a blouse. You would also wear heels, no higher than three inches. In very formal office settings, you’ll also need to wear panty hose. This is ideal for an office setting, but you obviously aren’t going to want to wear a suit to a wedding. In that case wear a dress that is equally formal to your date’s suit. And follow the rule I mentioned above – if you wouldn’t wear it to church, don’t wear it to a wedding.

Black tie – the most common formal attire. While white tie is the most formal, black tie is more commonly used.
Men – to a black tie affair, men will wear a tuxedo. This includes a white dress shirt and black bowtie.

Women – women wear a ball gown or cocktail dress and evening shoes. If the invitation says “Black tie optional” you can wear a knee length dress. If not, you’ll need to wear a floor length dress

White tie – the most formal of dress attire.
Men – will wear a black tailcoat worn over a white shirt, Marcella waistcoat, a white bowtie worn around a detachable collar, high-waisted black trousers and patent leather shoes. Optional accessories would be evening gloves and a top hat.
Women – will wear full length evening dresses. Optional accessories would be jewelry, tiaras, and evening gloves.

A quick color rule for you: always wear dark colors to a funeral and never wear white to a wedding (unless you're the bride of course!).

My hope is that this was helpful and you'll be prepared for your next event.

Have anything to add? I'd love to hear about it in the comments!

SHE Procrastinates: Five 5 Minute Halloween Costumes

Thursday, October 29, 2015

Let's face it, we all are guilty of procrastinating. I'm so guilty I should be serving a lifetime sentence, especially this year. It's the week of Halloween (one of my favorite holidays for pete's sake!) and I still have yet to purchase a pumpkin. If I'm still pumpkin-less, you can guarantee that I am without a costume, too. Sound the alarms, right? Wrong! I am here with 5 different costumes you already own you just don't know it yet.

1. Cat Burglar I combined my fun leopard pajama shorts with a stripe tee. For an eye mask I cut the bottom of an old tee and marked where my eyes were. I cut the holes and tied it in the back. I topped the look off with gold cat ears ($1 at Target) and I'm the sneakiest, glummest cat burglar in town! Hide your candy!

2. Eloise at the Plaza My favorite sassy soul sister is not only a diva but adorable! Channel your inner princess and whip out this easy costume. What you need: A black skirt, suspenders, knee high socks, black flats and a pink hair bow. Bonus points if you have an adorable pug.

3. Gretchen Weiners. Everyone's favorite Mean Girl, right? All that's required is a pink sweater (if you are really in the spirit, cut two holes out where your bra is a la Regina George), a khaki skirt, hoop earrings & a box of toaster strudels. Her Dad is the inventor, duh.

4. Paper Doll  First grab a skin colored, black, white or any color dress you have. Next get 2-3 poster boards and trace your new outfit! Don't forget to add a couple of tabs. Use fabric glue or safety pins to attach to attach to your dress. Don't forget the accessories!

5. Elves on the Shelf If you are in the market for the perfect last minute couples costume, look no further! All you need is red sweatpants, red leggings and two red tees. Next grab about 2 yards of white felt and 1 yard of red felt. Cut into four large squares and trim the corners to make circles. Cut out holes for your head and waist. For one circle make the hole a tad larger and then safety pin for your skirt. Cut the remaining circles into small points or triangles and throw over your head! Cut the yard of red felt in half and fold into cones, hot glue the edges into a hat and you are officially the cutest elves in town. *This is also perfect for Christmas parties and Santa Pub Crawls.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope everyone has a wonderful Halloween! We would love to see your costumes, please tweet them to us (@SHEdegree).

SHE Parties: Thanksgiving

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

I love Thanksgiving!  It is by far my most favorite holiday!!  Why?  Because there is no pressure. You just have to eat and hang out.  It is incredible.  I love food and I love to eat. Of course, since I am the cook, I have to prepare the food before I can eat it. But, I am totally fine with cooking.

Since our Mom has passed away, I am the matriarch of our family and every other year my siblings come to my house.  This is an off year and they will be with the in-laws!  So we are taking Thanksgiving to the BEACH!!!  I love Thanksgiving at the beach!  Do we still have turkey and all the trimmings?  You bet we do!  I told you it is my favorite holiday and the food is the best part.  This year I will do all the prep work in my kitchen and take the dishes ready to bake.  It is a lot of work on the front end, but makes the beach time easy and fun.  A real vacation and holiday all in one!  We eat fried turkey (Thanks to Jerrod) and all the trimmings and then the next day we have crab legs and fried crab claws!  Did I tell you I love to eat!!  There will be movies, games, shopping, and football.  You also can’t forget walks on the beach and searching for shells.

Here is what I am doing to have the best and easy Thanksgiving…

I have a box started with things to take with me.  I bought our paper products when I bought the Halloween costumes.  I also saw some cute decorations for our table.  I put things in the box as I get them, this way everything is ready to go when it is time to pack.  Other things in the box so far…syrup for the waffles, a game I don’t want to forget and sunscreen (fingers crossed).

Other bags I will carry to the beach with me to make Thanksgiving easier are my kitchen bag and medicine bag. Since we stay in condos I always bring my kitchen bag that stays packed.  It has all the little things you usually have to run out and grab at the store - salt &pepper shakers, oil, zip lock bags, dishwashing liquid and dishwasher soap.  I also have paper towels, paper plates, cups, forks, and extra garbage bags. My medicine bag is full of things my family typically may need. In it you’ll find - Advil, liquid Advil, Zyrtec, band aids, eye drops, pepto (so far I haven’t needed this, knock on wood)!   As a family we like to travel a lot, and I always pack a lot of stuff.  My husband has a love/hate relationship with the stuff I take.  Of course the one time I didn’t take any of my “extra” bags……he was missing them. Guarantee he won't gripe about what I take this year.

Now let’s talk about Thanksgiving Day… When we go to the beach for Thanksgiving, we go with my best friend and her family.  Carla and I have adopted each other and we spend every holiday together. Her husband always makes the fried turkey and they are the best! Since I make the sides, I will do most of the prep work at home. This way I’m not spending all day cooking and can spend all day sitting on the beach!  I put it in coolers when we leave and all I have to do Thanksgiving morning is put it in crock pots or pans to bake.

The rest of the trip we will eat in our condo.  Of course we will go out to get seafood, once or twice.  I like to make muffins and cookies for us to snack on and waffles are a tradition for breakfast that can’t be forgotten!   One other way to help make the trip low maintenance is, I usually take spaghetti sauce I have already prepared and frozen for dinner one night.

We can't wait to gobble til we wobble!  How do you do Thanksgiving? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

Weekly Meal Planning

Tuesday, October 27, 2015

Via Pinterest

Hey Y’all! Cooking throughout the workweek can be a pretty stressful task if you ask me. I’ve learned the least stressful way to cook after work is to meal plan on the weekends. It really doesn’t take very long, and all of the guesswork of “what to cook” and “what ingredients do I have” is gone.

For a family of two, I plan to cook 3-4 meals per week. Andrew and I are able to eat leftovers at least one night a week and go out or grab something on the weekend. But this can be done on a much grander scale and used to meal plan for two weeks or a month!

I start by jotting down ideas of dinners and narrow them down to 3-4 depending on what kind of week we'll be having. Once we have decided what we want for the week, I write down all of the ingredients I’ll need to complete the meal. I browse the pantry to see what ingredients we already have and whatever we’re missing, I add to the shopping list. I’ll also add basic items to the list that we use every week: bread, fruit, deli meat etc.

It’s really easy as that. I typically go to the store on Saturday or Sunday to ensure everything is fresh for the week and then I don’t have to go back until the next week!

If you're like me, I'm still figuring my way around the grocery store. So in order to cut down on backtracking, I use an app called "Shop List Free". It lets me organize my shopping list by department. That way I'm able to grab everything in each department that I need without walking all over the store multiple times. Do what makes shopping easiest for you!

Have you ever tried meal planning? How do you survive cooking throughout the week? Let me know in the comments!

Oh no ! I don't have any ......

Monday, October 26, 2015

Whether you have a dorm, apartment or home- you probably have a kitchen.  Yay!! That is a great thing.  Hopefully you also have a good cookbook. I know most of you younger ladies probably would rather use "Pinterest" or "Google" to find a recipe and there are excellent recipes to be found on them both.  But I love books... especially old cookbooks.

Some people like to "cook" and others like to "bake" (& yes I know some like to do neither).  But did you know there was a difference?  When you "cook" you can follow the recipe to the tee or be as creative as you want to be - add a little of this and a lot of that and none of those.... and it should still be delish.

When you "bake" the same is not necessarily true.  Baking is precise, exact measurements, exact baking temperatures and virtually no cheating.  (Lisa will be sharing on the blog about how you get those exact measurements of the ingredients coming up soon).

You must also follow the recipe..... This is where I struggle. I am not the best at reading the whole recipe before getting started.  I tend to try to get a head of myself and that dear friends, is not always a good thing when you are baking.  This could mean I read "milk" when it actually calls for "buttermilk" (really - who keeps that on hand every week?)  I have found myself with the mixing bowl going and pouring in my ingredients and then I realize what I have done.

What to do now?  Most any cookbook you find will have "substitutions" listed in the back of them.  Check here for a list I have used often:   Betty Crocker Emergency Substitutions.

There are also other types of substitutions I use when baking. I think they give your dish a little more homemade flavor without any extra time.  Working full time I don't always have the time to bake from scratch. I like to doctor up a prepackaged brownie or cake mix.  Simple tweaks but they make a big difference. I love to stir in chocolate chips (and nuts if I am not sharing with Brittney) and frost with a can of packaged frosting (Although homemade is super easy... will share that another day). Makes it a little more special.

If a recipe calls for water I use milk.  Whole milk is best but I keep cans of evaporated milk on hand. A small can is almost the exact amount needed in most mixes.  It is relatively inexpensive and has a much longer shelf life then real milk.  I use it in mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and soups for a creamy flavor.

When you decide to cook or bake, I would recommend you read your recipe, gather all of your ingredients and have them measured and ready for use before you get started.  You will find the helps you avoid the “oh no” situation.  But if you are like me and maybe you can get a little distracted ~ don't worry Betty Crocker will be there to save the day.

I know there are lots of healthy ingredient substitutions too.  Applesauce for oil, yogurt for sour cream.. What have you tried?  How did your family like the taste?  Hope you will share your success stories with us too!!
