SHE De-Stresses

Thursday, April 28, 2016

Hey y'all. I don't know if you know or not but April is Stress Awareness Month!

Next week I'm out of town the beginning of the week, have events Thursday-Sunday, and then kick off the week before my work's biggest conference. Needless to say I'm stressing right now! So with us wrapping up Stress Awareness Month, and me clearly needing help, I'm sharing with you today a couple of tips on how to de-stress.

Go for a run/walk. Being outside in the fresh air and sunshine is so wonderful. Getting in a good workout while your at it? You'll feel like superwoman!

Throw in your headphones. Whether its classical music or rap music, put on something that helps get you in a better mood.

Dance party! This goes hand in hand with the last tip. Leave the headphones in or take them out and blare the music, just get moving. A good dance party is good for the soul.

Grounding. If your on the edge you need to ground yourself. Look around and focus. Notice your surroundings and take a deep breath.

Puppy love. Or cat, dog, horse, you get the idea. Love on those pets. My Mack baby always makes me feel better.

Count to 10. Breath deep while you do.

Walk away. Get up and go to the restroom, or refill your water. Something to get you away from the stressor for two or three minutes.

Punch a pillow/Squeeze a stress ball.  Nothing like a little violence to calm you down, right?

I hope you've found this helpful! If you have any go to tricks that I didn't mention, I'd love to hear them. I have a feeling I'm gonna need them over the next few weeks.

SHE: MARKET UPDATE

Tuesday, April 26, 2016

Hey Y’all,

We are so excited about our market in June.  Have you heard about it?  ;)  The “Everything SHE Needs Market"” is June 25th here in Chattanooga.  After blogging for a few months, we started thinking about how we could expand the SHE Degree, what we wanted to be able to do and how we could help others….  The market idea came to life and has been driving us forward for the last 2 months.  The SHE Degree market has very specific ideals… just as the name describes.  We want ladies to be able to spend the day with us shopping and learning something new in the process or even better, start a new career to benefit their family! Several direct sales vendors will be present and would be more than happy to show you how you can join their team.

Lisa and I have spent quite a few days out beating the pavement recruiting unique vendors. (One was even spent dragging poor Madison around with us in the rain!! We got her a nice yummy lunch though).  But we really had so much fun! (Sorry, we attempted selfies to show our efforts .. we need a little more practice).  And everyone is so receptive to our philosophy of “Home Ec for the modern SHE”.  Most have commented about how this is needed.  We have met a lot of interesting ladies and business owners. They are going to be so much fun at the market.  Vendors that have been selected are from all different types of businesses: fashion, beauty, home décor, health, educational and more.  We want lots of options. Aren’t you getting excited too?
Be sure to follow the blog over the next few weeks as we begin sharing the list of companies we have joining us… Y’all it is growing every day!  We start texting the group first thing every morning, to see what businesses signed up over night!   God has really opened the doors and things are jumping into place.  For that we are thankful and blessed beyond words!

You will want to get connected so you don’t miss some fun opportunities coming up. And it is so easy as we are literally everywhere- Facebook, Blogger, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter.  Have you invited your friends to follow us? Don’t leave them out!
Mark your calendars for June 25, 2016.  Market will be open 10- 6 at Camp Jordan.  Next invite your friends and plan on a day of fun girl time & fellowship. Tickets will be $5.00 and parking is FREE.  But for insiders like you… advance tickets can be purchased on our website, www.SHEDegree.com, until June 1st.  If you purchase for a group of 10 or more, tickets will be discounted to $3.00 each.  So get your sisters, girlfriends, or church group together and order your tickets soon.

Y’all stay tuned and get excited!! It’s going to be a fun day!

SHE: "Learns" to Read Again

Image via Google
Hey Ya'll! I hope your week is going well so far. As we enjoy the last few days of April, I can't help but get excited for summer. We are so close! Even though I am no longer in school, I still get excited for the season. Our summer months seem to be filled with more time outside, less structured schedules, and overall a more relaxed state of mind. This summer I have decided I want to accomplish a few goals, one being to read more. I was never a big reader growing up, I think it was mostly due to "required" reading for school, so when I had time to read for pleasure, I never wanted to. Now that those days are over, I have slowly embraced reading.

If you read last week's blog, I mentioned I read the new Harper Lee book, Go Set a Watchman. I really enjoyed it, but now that I'm finished with it, I am looking for something else to start. So, I did a Google search of the "best books ever". I was certainly surprised to see what all was listed. I quickly realized I had actually seen the movie versions of multiple titles listed: The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Time Traveler's Wife, The Help, etc. Now I feel like I need to read the books just to see what the movie added or left out. My gut instinct tells me the books will be far better, they always are!

To narrow things down, I made a list of a few I wanted to read over time. I love the classics, The Great Gatsby, To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. So I looked for more classics to check off my list. The first (and probably longest) being, Gone with the Wind.

Image via Google
Next,  Little Women.

Image via Google
The Help. I loved, loved this movie. I can only imagine how much I will love the book.

For me, this is a pretty good start for summer reading. Hopefully, I will be able to tackle these, and add a few more to my list! Are you a big reader? What are your favorite books? I would love to have recommendations!

SHE's Barter

Wednesday, April 20, 2016

bar·ter
ˈbärdər/
verb
  1. 1
exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.

Bartering is not just something that occurred in history, trust me when I say it is how I get many things done! The act of bartering, like mentioned in the definition above, is trading what we can do for what we need done.
A few examples of things I’ve done include watching my friend’s little ones while they went on a date, then the next time they’d do the same for me. Free babysitting! Or my friend Carla would cut my children’s hair and I would bake for her in return.
Bartering is a fabulous way to save money and get the things you need.  We truly need to bring it back.  My friends and I have done it for years.  We have realized that when we utilize the gifts we have and share them with our friends they share their gifts!  This is a great money saver!  Money we can spend on trips or education or plain old bills!  (Or a new outfit?!).

So pass around your kid’s clothes and toys.  Honestly, I would rather give my hand-me downs to a friend than put them in a yard sale.  Let your friends shop your yard sales and not be charged for the stuff they want.  I love to give my friends things.  Because next week you might need help putting in a fan or a light fixture... and I know which friend’s husband I’ll need to help, do you?

Case in point… This week at my house was a do it yourself pool liner!

We were able to put in the pool liner for less  than  half the cost of what the pool store quoted.  How?  We bartered with a friend that has put in a few of his own pool liners.

I would like to encourage each of you to start bartering with your friends.  What are their gifts?  What are yours?  What do you want or need?  What do they want or need?  Do you need childcare?  Who are your child's friends?  Can you keep the kids one night?  They keep the kids the next time?

Do you barter already?  I would love to hear what you barter!

SHE Travels to Destin, FL

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Hey Ya'll! This past weekend Andrew and I took a quick trip to one of our most favorite places - Destin, Florida. If you've never been, you need to plan a trip. The sand is like sugar, the water is crystal clear, and the people and restaurants are fabulous. During our time we simply relaxed.

Image via Google
We arrived on Friday, and the weather was gloomy and cold (I'm talking 60 degrees and we should have packed warm clothes, cold). Thankfully the weather warmed up, and it was sunny by Saturday morning! During the day, we could either be found on the beach or on our porch enjoying the weather. We are big fans of utilizing the beach services offered. Instead of lugging chairs and umbrellas to and from the beach each day, (and transporting them and 7 pounds of sand back home) we opt to rent beach chairs and an umbrella. I love to be outside in the sun all day, but my fair skin just can't take the beating, so an umbrella is a necessity! The gentlemen who set up the chairs and umbrellas each day are awesome. You tell them where you want to sit, and they will have your spot ready for you each morning. Just grab a good book, some sunscreen, and a towel and you will be set for the day! I actually  barely left my chair once I started reading Harper Lee's, Go Set a Watchman. I'm almost finished and have loved it so far.

Once evening time rolled around, we would get ready for dinner and head out to our favorite spots. We are huge seafood lovers, and will do our best to eat it every night we can. Our go-tos are Pompano Joe's and The Back Porch. Both are located on the beach and allow outside dining, my favorite! If you aren't crazy about seafood, but don't want to rely on a chain restaurant for dinner, try Callahan's. They offer a little bit of everything, and it's delicious!

Andrew enjoying Pompano Joe's
If you are not crazy about the beach or want some nighttime activities, there are plenty of other entertainment options in Destin. There are two large shopping areas, Silver Sands Premium Outlets, as well as Destin Commons. This year we only made it to Destin Commons. The set up and shops are my favorite, especially at night when all of the night lights are on and music is playing. Or you can venture to the Harborwalk Village. There are shops and restaurants, and so many neat family activities, like watching boats coming in and out of the harbor.

Today we are heading home, and tomorrow we will face the realities of work and routine again. We are excited to see our fur babies but sure will miss frozen, fruity drinks and the warm sunshine. Happy Tuesday!

SHE: Old School

Monday, April 18, 2016

Hey Y’all,
Happy Monday ~ Hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful weather! Sunshine is just good for my spirits.   We posted a cute cartoon on our Facebook page over the weekend and it got me thinking about my Home Ec classes and what we learned.  So I did a little blog research while soaking up the sunny day and found some interesting tips to share about the expectations of 1950's housewives and for some really cute ones, Pinterest has even more.   I assure you, I have rarely cooked or cleaned in heels and pearls.

1. Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal on time. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs ... A good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so that you will be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your makeup, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh looking ... His boring day may need a lift.

3. Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the house just before your husband arrives, gathering up books, toys, papers, etc. ... Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order.

4. Prepare the children. Take a few minutes to wash the children's hands and faces ... They are little treasures, and he would like to see them playing the part.

5. Minimize the noise. ... Greet him with a warm smile and be glad to see him.

6. Don'ts: Don't greet him with problems and complaints. Don't complain if he's late for dinner. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day. Make him comfortable.

Today is a very different era and the roles of wives and husbands have in some ways changed significantly.  More women are working outside of the home. We now have stay at home dads and couples on day/night shifts that may seem to simply pass in the night. But the basics of a home have not, there are still meals to prepare, rooms to clean, spouses to greet and children to teach.
Even if you think some of the ideas are old fashioned, remember a family is a team and everyone has a role to play. Dividing responsibilities and conquering them together is much more fun.  A "welcome home" with a smile can really set the tone for your evening.  Cooking a nice dinner and maintaining a neat home are the icing on the cake ...no matter who bakes it.

SHE Goes Blonde!

Thursday, April 14, 2016

Hi friends! It's almost the weekend, but more importantly it's almost summer! I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to spending my weekends on the lake.  One common trend you see a lot before and during summer is blonde hair, and I jumped on board. So today I'm going to share a few tips on going blonde and keeping your hair healthy in the process.

First I'm going to give you a little background on myself so you can understand why I struggled with this first tip. I love to change my hair. It is a quick and easy way to provide a little bit of change. I'm a natural brunette and have dyed my hair multiple shades of brown and auburn, and love that instant change. I'm also a very impatient person. When I decide on a color I change it right then and don't look back.  Now let's get started....

You aren't going to go from brown to blonde in one session.

This was heartbreaking to me. I decided to go blonde back in September because I was going through a time and needed a major change. I was able to get a hair appointment that night. Three hours later I left the salon with a handful of highlights. What? I almost cried on the way home.  But that is just how it works. Think about how you wouldn't up a run a marathon one day, you need time to train your body, just like your hair needs time to process this change. Here I am seven months later and am fully blonde. (and between you and me am getting anxious for a new color, it's been too long!)

Purple shampoo is your friend!

But be careful....  I have warm tones in my hair so my blonde can get a bit brassy. For some people that is the look they are going for, some not so much. Purple is opposite of yellow on the color wheel so using purple shampoo will cancel out the brassiness of your hair. Now why did I tell you to be careful? If you leave it sitting on your hair for too long it will turn your hair purple, just ask my mom!! This leads me to my next point....

Don't turn green!

Since it's summertime you need to be careful around pools. If your hair is freshly dyed the chlorine can turn it green. Yikes!

Moisturize!

Going blonde is going to dry your hair out in a big way!! So you're definitely going to want to work in some time for hair masks. My favorite is coconut oil. Not only does it work wonders, it smells great! And if I close my eyes I can pretend I'm at the beach. Riley talked all about coconut oil hair masks in this post here.

Careful with the heat!

Like I just said, this process is going to dry your hair out and using heat on your hair every five minutes will only make it worse! I don't like to give up my straightener, but try your very best to cut back on how often you use them. It is summer after all, rock that natural look!

I hope this was helpful to you and your process of going blonde will go a bit smoother!

SHE Cooks: Chicken Stuffed Shells

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

Hey Ya'll! The other night I attempted a new recipe, and it was super simple and tasty! Chicken stuffed shells is one of our new favorites. With only a handful of ingredients and 30 minutes in the oven, it's hard to beat.

Image via Pinterest
There are three key ingredients to this recipe, chicken, jumbo pasta shells, and StoveTop chicken flavored stuffing. Start by boiling 6-7 chicken tenders, or 2-3 chicken breasts. In another pot, cook 18-20 jumbo pasta shells, drain and set aside to cool. Once the chicken and pasta shells are almost finished cooking, begin cooking your StoveTop stuffing as directed (only takes 5 minutes!).

Once your chicken is finished cooking, shred or cube it, and place in a large mixing bowl along with the cooked stuffing. Next, add one can of cream of chicken soup to the chicken/stuffing mixture. Take a large spoon and stuff the chicken mixture into a pasta shell - easy as that. Stuff your shells and place them in a greased baking dish until all of the mixture is gone. Lastly, take one more can of cream of chicken and dump it into a small bowl. Fill the cream of chicken soup can halfway with milk - whole milk or evaporated milk works better than skim or low fat milk, but use what you have - and mix it with the cream of chicken. Pour the mixture over the shells, cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

This recipe makes more than enough for Andrew and I, but you could easily half or double the recipe if needed! I hope you enjoy!

SHE Sends Her Kids To Camp

Monday, April 11, 2016

Hey Y'all,

image via google
It is early April, but this means the children will be getting out of school in less than 2 months... Yippee!!!
I love summer time schedules or more importantly I enjoy the lack of a rigid schedule.  Even though I worked outside the home when Brittney was little, summers were still fun and less structured. We could play outside later and enjoy no homework nights!!  If we fudged on bedtime, it wasn't a big deal, I wasn't worried about her needing to be focused on schoolwork.  While my work schedule remained the same this meant I still needed childcare during the summer.  I wasn't crazy about summer care at school, not because it wasn't a good option.  But it was summer and NOBODY wants to be at school in the summer if they can avoid it.  So this left me to search other options.  We were never a "sleep away" camp family, so day camps were my go to activities.  Let's see, there was volleyball camp, cheer camp, vacation bible schools & swim lessons. We were fortunate that our church also offered summer daycare - that was ideal and boy did they keep them busy! But it also gave us the option for some down time. They would often have pool time in the mornings and then movies in the afternoon.

image via google
You probably are well aware, but it takes a lot of planning and coordinating to make sure they have fun and that means it is time to start planning some sweet Summer- time activities for your little and not so little ones.  This is a good idea for Moms who are home with the children during the summer too. It's okay to say it ~ after a few weeks of togetherness, you might look forward to giving them a few hours a day at day camp.

You are in luck! Because here in the Chattanooga area we have so many fun options! Just to name a few ~ you may want to check out Creative Discovery Museum , TN Aquarium Camp , GPS Summer Camp , Baylor Summer Camps/ Day and Overnight  & this week the Chattanooga Times Free Press had a full list of Summer 2016 Camps.

They all look fun and I am sure you will find a great one to fit your child's interests and schedule. One thing is for sure, summers are never long enough! So remember it is time to start planning today!!

National No Housework Day

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Hey y'all! I'm not sure if you know what today is or not, but it's National No Housework Day. AKA my favorite day of the year (aside from Christmas and my birthday)!

Now I know we're all busy people so you probably have a full day already. I'm out of town for a work conference, but if I was home I would be going straight from work to my husband's kickball game. On the off chance that you don't have plans, I'm going to give you a few ideas of what you can do instead of cleaning!

Read a book!
I love to read. If it's a good book I can't put it down and will finish it in a day or two. Unfortunately, with the hustle and bustle of life I don't get to read as often as I'd like, but I've got a list of books I want to read as soon as I get a chance. Top of the list is the Game of Thrones series and the Divergent series.

Watch TV or a movie!
It's hard to sit down and catch up on your shows or the latest movies when the sink is full of dishes and there is a pile of laundry to do. But when you aren't allowed to do it today, sit down and enjoy those shows! Conveniently, it's TGIT and so I will be watching Grey's Anatomy and Scandal tonight!

Plan your family vacation!
Today I'm looking at condos for Hubs and I to go to the beach later this year. Websites like www.airbnb.com and www.vrbo.com are my go-to's for traveling.

What are you doing on your day off from housework? I'd love to hear some other ideas.

SHE Has a Love/Hate Relationship with Pinterest!

Wednesday, April 6, 2016

I love all the things I see on Pinterest!  So when I came across this I knew I needed to make it for my back porch.  I have had my share of Pinterest fails!  I am also a gray thumb.  One who usually sends plants to their death.  But, I decided to try it any way.  So I went to gather the supplies.
I used three pots, potting soil, river rocks and plants.  I started by placing the smallest pot upside down inside the biggest pot and adding dirt.
Once it was to the top of the smallest pot , I put the pot of rocks on top of the smallest pot.
I added more dirt and then started placing my plants around to see how many I would use.
Then I planted them and added more dirt around each plant.
Next I added the candle and the hurricane lamp.  And I was finished. When I make another one, I will only put half the river rocks in the pot.  Then I will place the candle and hurricane lamp in and fill around the edges with rocks.  This time I had to dig out rocks...so don't make that mistake!  I loved the way it turned out and at least it wasn't a Pinterest fail!!

SHE Plants a Vegetable Garden

Tuesday, April 5, 2016

"Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce." - Jeremiah 29:5
Hey Ya'll! This year Andrew and I decided we wanted to plant a vegetable garden. I, personally, have never grown anything, and am a little intimidated by this adventure. After all, I do well if I remember to water the flowers in my kitchen... Andrew on the other hand is pretty familiar to gardening. His family has a garden every year! So thankfully, we have plenty of knowledgable gardeners to seek out for advice and help.

Before we started, I did a little research to see how and when we needed to start out garden. I found the chart below to be extremely helpful!
Image via Pinterest
The first step was deciding where we wanted to place our garden. There were a few obstacles we had to overcome. One major one, making the area out of reach for the pups. They have an invisible fence that keeps them confined to a small portion of our front yard, both side yards, and the entire back yard. So in order to not have the garden in our front yard (classy...) we opted to build a fence in our side yard to keep them and other critters, mainly deer, out. This allowed us to have maximum space to plant, lots of sunlight, and minimal damage from the pups. Another large factor was making sure the soil was in good shape for growing vegetables and received lots of sunlight. We tend to have rocky soil, so Andrew tilled the area three times, as of today. He let it rain, dry out, and tilled the area. We are hoping to get two more tills in before we plant, just to make sure the soil is soft.

Next step, and the fun part, was deciding what we wanted to grow. We stopped by a local feed and seed store and purchased a variety of vegetable seeds - green beans, corn, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, okra, watermelons, and potatoes (not from seeds). We have based our planting schedule off the schedule above, so the only vegetables that have been planted so far are potatoes. To do so, Andrew took a garden hoe and dug a 10 inch deep hole. He put two potato eyes inside and covered it with dirt. He spaced the holes 12-16 inches apart, and planted around 20 holes. Now we have to wait and see how they do!

Here is where the potatoes are planted - on the outside of the fence.
For sizing and spacing, the garden is 60 feet x 25 feet. Andrew advises when you start planting to come 30 inches from the outside of the garden and plant your first row. If you plant each row 30 inches apart, it should leave you with an approximate two foot walkway between rows. He also recommends planting vegetables that grow taller (pole beans and corn) together, then mid-height vegetables (okra) next, and lastly ground growing vegetables (cucumbers, squash, and zucchini) after that. Our potatoes are on the outside of the fenced in area, since they will grow in the ground. Also outside of the fence are watermelons, since they tend to take off once they grow.

As a friendly reminder, most everyone loves home grown, fresh corn. Planting corn behind pole beans can "hide" it from plain view, and may decrease the likelihood of people stealing your corn!

I hope to post updates as we plant more vegetables! If you grow a garden, I hope you have a successful season and harvest. Here's hoping the Lord blesses ours. Then learning to can the vegetables will be the next adventure...
