We
are staying indoors this afternoon as the weather is not the best. I
started thinking about a few random tips to share with you... Never know when
they might come in handy.
Have
you ever wondered how your momma knew just how make her laundry smell like a
summer day? Or how to perfectly season a dish?
When
you ask her, does she say “SHE just knows”? Probably a SHE has shared her
tips and secrets along the way with her and over time it became second
nature. It's just something she does. I am sure there are some things you do too
that probably aren’t written down in the directions because you just know that
you do it ...
When
making grits, when do you salt them? (And
yes, you salt grits- you put sugar on oatmeal). When your water is
boiling, you add the salt or you will never and I mean never get them
salted no matter how much you add after the grits are cooked.
With
most vegetables and meats, you need to add your seasonings while they are
cooking. It is much harder to do once
they are cooked.
What
about making sweet tea ~ sugar has to be added to the hot tea water and stirred
until dissolved completely before you add any additional cold water.
Otherwise it will not dissolve.
Boiling
potatoes: You never actually "boil" them. Begin by putting
potatoes and 1/2-1 tsp of salt (depending on the number if potatoes you are
using) in a pot of cold water, making sure they are all covered. Cook
over medium heat. You never want to actually “boil" them or they will
begin to boil away.
Pasta:
add salt to your water, bring your water to a boil then add your pasta.
If
you add pasta to the cold water it will clump together.
As for laundry~ every so often you may want to add a cup of baking soda to your water or
a cup of vinegar. Fabric softeners are great at making our clothes feel soft, but over time they can weigh the fabrics down and they may not feel as clean as they should be. I found this on Pinterest- see what you think. http://www.buzzfeed.com/twopoodles/laundry-acks?sub=2707819_1874387#.inqzX6j22.
