Work Trip Etiquette

Whether you’re new to the work force or have been there for a while, chances are you’re going to have to travel at some point.  I’m part of the conferences team at my office so I tend to travel a lot. As a SHE you need to be well-versed for all of life’s situations, including traveling for work.
So, here are some tips to make sure you’re at the top of your game when travelling for work.

1.       Be on time. I can’t stress this one enough. Being late is not a good look.

2.       Don’t Overpack. This is especially important if you’re carpooling. It is rude to take up all the trunk space.

3.       Be mindful of confined spaces.  You may be in a room with someone all day. This isn’t like being in your office or cubicle. So, be aware of your perfume, aftershave, etc. No one wants to get a headache from smelling you all day!

4.       Keep personal what is personal, and business, business. This one is big. Leave your personal stuff out of your work. Staining your work with tears isn’t the best plan and neither is loud arguments on the phone!

5.       Be respectful of who you’re traveling with. Your own ways may not sit well with others so you might have to adapt some.

6.       Drink Rule. I believe that it is important to have a “rule” set in your head for how much you’re allowed to drink at work events. The last thing you want is getting sloshed at dinner and your coworkers/boss judging you for it for the rest of your career. I developed my rule a long time ago. Mine is – if I’m drinking beer or wine then I will have two drinks. If I’m drinking a liquor drink I stick with one. Knowing your rule ahead of time will keep you prepared and professional!

I hope these tips help you out when preparing for you next (or first) trip.
What are your go-to work trip tips? I’d love to hear about them in the comments!
